FAQ

I can't see Study and Learn in the left navigation of the Copilot app. What should I check?

Check the following:

  • Is Copilot Chat enabled for your account?
  • Did your IT administrator enable agents for students?
  • Is Study and Learn allowed for your user or group under your institution's agent policies?
  • Are you signed in with an Education account that has a Microsoft 365 Education A1, A3, or A5 license?
  • If you're in a K-12 tenant, is your account's AgeGroup set to notAdult or adult? Accounts set to minor can't use Copilot Chat.
  • Are you using Microsoft Copilot on the web or Windows desktop? Study and Learn isn't yet supported on every Copilot platform.

You can also look for Study and Learn in the Chat dropdown. If these requirements are met and the agent is still missing, contact your IT administrator or Microsoft Education Support.

How do I enable only Study and Learn and no other agents?

There is not currently a single "allow Study and Learn only" setting. The current agent-management model allows administrators to enable agents for students and then block individual agents.

To limit students to Study and Learn:

  1. Turn on Enable agents for students.
  2. Keep Study and Learn allowed for the intended student users or groups.
  3. Use agent-management policies to block each other agent that students shouldn't use.

New agents aren't blocked automatically. Review newly available Microsoft and third-party agents and update your block policies as needed.

Is a preselected agent the same as a required agent?

No. A preselected agent opens automatically when a learner starts a new Copilot conversation. The learner can still switch to standard Copilot Chat or another agent if the institution allows it. Preselection doesn't restrict access to other agents.

How does my institution make Study and Learn the preselected agent?

IT administrators manage preselection from the Education panel in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Preselection is on by default for K-12 Education tenants. For Higher Education tenants, it is off by default and an IT administrator must turn it on. When enabled, Study and Learn opens at the start of each new student conversation, but students can still switch to another experience allowed by the institution.

Why is Study and Learn preselected again after I switched away from it?

Preselection applies to each new conversation. Switching agents changes the current conversation. The next new conversation starts with Study and Learn again. Do higher education institutions need to enable Copilot Chat for students? Copilot Chat is available by default to adult learners in Higher Education tenants when they have an eligible license. IT administrators should still set the Education Tenant Identifier to Higher Education and explicitly identify any younger students so the correct age policy applies.

Can students under 13 use Study and Learn?

No. In K-12 tenants, accounts with AgeGroup set to minor can't access Copilot Chat or Study and Learn.

Why can a learner access Copilot Chat but not Study and Learn?

Copilot Chat and agents are managed separately. Confirm that agents are enabled for students and that Study and Learn is allowed for the learner's user or group. Agent block policies can prevent Study and Learn from appearing even when Copilot Chat itself is available.

Why did my age-group change not take effect immediately?

Bulk changes are processed asynchronously, and processing time depends on the size of the directory. Wait for processing to finish, download the users again to verify the saved values, and then test with a representative student account.

Does Study and Learn cost extra?

No. Study and Learn is included with Microsoft 365 Education A1, A3, and A5 licenses at no additional cost.

Where can learners use Study and Learn?

Study and Learn is available in Microsoft Copilot on the web and Windows desktop. Support for additional platforms is planned.

Where do the images in Study and Learn come from?

Study and Learn uses search to provide relevant, web-safe images in a carousel. Images are included when they support the next step in a learner's understanding. Further improvements are planned.

Is Study and Learn available in languages other than English (US)?

Yes. Study and Learn is available in 40 languages beyond English (US). Set your browser or operating system to a supported locale, then open Study and Learn. Learning activities appear in your chosen app locale. You can also switch languages during a conversation or work with uploaded materials in another language for a multilingual learning experience.

What is the learning science foundation of Study and Learn?

Study and Learn is designed around four pillars: adaptive scaffolding, productive struggle, active learning, and application and transfer. Together, they guide the agent to meet learners where they are, preserve useful thinking effort, provide retrieval and practice opportunities, and help learners apply their understanding in new contexts.
